Glyphosate is used off label to dry up wheat, beans, peas, and lentils for harvest, it does not wash off, or come off during processing, and bioaccumulates. Glyphosate also holds on to minerals essential for our health. Food grown in soil contaminated with glyphosate is has less minerals and vitamins that organic food grown in clean soil.

Canola is in nearly everything. It is not healthy. And it is almost all GMO. I avoid any product with Canola unless it expressly reads Organic GMO free Canola. -- GFL
"DuPont's GMO Canola "safety study" has been exposed for what it truly is. Industry funded pseudo-science. Or perhaps nonsense is a better word. Both the test group and the control group were fed GMOs laced with Roundup.
The study was funded by DuPont, performed by DuPont employees and published in the Journal of Food & Chemical Toxicology, which is controlled by Dupont. And the biggest farce... the DuPont authors declare in their paper that "there are no conflicts of interest" – despite the fact that they are employees of the company that stands to profit from the market authorization of the GMO in question. And Bryan Delaney, the first author of the DuPont study, is also managing editor of FCT. That interest too goes undisclosed.
Yes, this is the same journal that retracted the 2 year independent 3 times peer reviewed Seralini GMO long term toxicity study which found that rats fed Roundup Ready GMO corn developed mammary tumors, organ damage and died prematurely. The Seralini study was republished in the Journal of Environmental Sciences Europe. And so goes the regulatory approval process for GMOs.
This leads us to ask: Do you feel safe?"
The U.S. Government Has Tied El Salvador $277 million Aid Package to Monsanto’s GMO Seeds. In recent weeks, the U.S. has been pushing the El Salvadoran Government to sign the second Millennium Challenge Compact. One of the main conditions on the agreement is allegedly for the purchasing of GM seeds from Monsanto. At the end of 2013 it was announced that without ‘specific’ economic and environmental policy reforms, the U.S. government would not provide El Salvador with $277 million in aid money through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC). It is now clear that by ‘specific reforms’ the MCC means reforms that allow GM crops and their associated pesticides to be forced on El Salvador’s Government and citizens. Is it a coincidence that the MCC delayed its initial agreed aid payments following the announcement by the El Salvador Government that they were banning the use of Glyphosate (Roundup) and 52 other dangerous chemicals in September 2013? Is it a coincidence that the glyphosate ban was overturned?
This GMO was just passed on through the FDA and USDA -- and
Drum roll..... it is being seeded on employee lawns NOW--- will be avail commercially next yr 2015 and in the big box stores by 2016 for the neighbors to incorporate into their lawns--- Scott's GMO Kentucky Bluegrass has been modified to protect it from being killed by Roundup produced by Monsanto.
Round Up is very toxic, recent study found that the inert undisclosed ingredients combined with the active ingredient Glyphosate is 125X more toxic than the active ingredient alone. Yet Monsanto only 'safety tested' Glyhosate. Why is this poison being sold to families, farmers, or anyone ever??
Why isn't the other 97% disclosed?
--- All grass will be gmo ---
Pollen drift on a good day can be as far as 500 miles.
Biotech Buttkisser #1; USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack has urged caution as there can be cross contamination--- (and complete list on why Vilsack is a fox in the henhouse for Monsanto) yet, the Scott's employee's are essentially having their own open air test fields being told by Scotts to seed their lawns with the grass. Scott's is being expected to police themselves.Yes, that is as dumb as it sounded in your head when you read that sentence.
What the hell! How can a company unleash things like this into our Environment and we would be ok with this?
South Carolina, we have to get vocal on this. Or your kids could be playing on GMO grass growing in soccer fields, baseball fields, parks, schools and where ever else the GMO pollen drift goes.
A wonderful article written yesterday about our Charleston March March Against Monsanto-- We have some Pro-GMO comments on the article already--- Wanna pop over and show your support for labeling??
"Agent Orange is no longer produced -- so why am I bringing it up now? Because Dow AgroSciences (a subsidiary of Dow Chemicals), who was one of the original manufacturers of Agent Orange (AO), has developed a new generation of genetically modified (GM) crops -- soybeans, corn and cotton -- that are designed to resist a major ingredient in AO: the herbicide called 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). The use of 2,4-D, however, is not new, as it is actually one of the most widely used herbicides in the world. What is new – and disturbingly so – is that now that staple crops like soy and corn have been engineered to be resistant to 2,4-D, it may soon be applied to U.S. arable land on an unprecedented scale -- not unlike its indiscriminate application during Vietnam. The whole point of engineering resistance to an herbicide within a GMO plant, of course, is so that you can "carpet bomb" an entire field, leaving only your "Frankenfoods" standing, without having to exert even a fraction of the effort required raise crops organically and sustainably. In fact, if 2,4-D resistant crops receive approval and eventually come to replace Monsanto's failing Roundup-resistant crops as Dow intends, it is likely that billions of pounds will be needed, on top of the already insane levels of Roundup now being used (1.6 billion lbs were used in 2007 in the US alone!)."
They are often actions you can do from the comfort of your own home or office-- Petitions, comments, letter writing, postcard drives--- every voice counts. Together we are making a huge difference.
GMOs are getting some airtime on the mainstream, I really like how he illustrates how the engineering has not stopped our use of pesticides, but increased them exponentially.
Most folks want to chose have a choice in feeding their families foods with GMO ingredients or foods with low pesticide use. GMOs came onto the market with the promise of higher yields, lower pesticide use. Yields on GMO crops fall after an initial increase, pesticide use has increased, super-weeds circumvent the Round Up (glyphosate) being sprayed on them and several insects have evolved to survive the pesticide sprays and the Bt crops that produce their own internal pesticides. Nature seems to find a way.

The path has been cleared in Nitro, West Virginia, for the settlement of Superfund litigation against Monsanto for $93 million. The lawsuit relates to a Monsanto facility that produced Agent Orange and released toxic dioxin into a residential community, exposing thousands of people and contaminating their homes. The settlement includes long term medical monitoring of community residents and cleanup of their properties. The settlement also would allow residents to retain their right to file personal-injury lawsuits against Monsanto if medical tests turn up illnesses potentially related to dioxin exposure. Attorneys for the community, who are challenging the settlement, have 25 days to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to reconsider their petition. Medical monitoring and cleanup could start as soon as next month.
This is another great example of what Monsanto calls sustainability. Should this company be messing with our food?
The Pompeo bill has been introduced, appropriately nick named: "The DARK Act" Denying Americans' Right-to-Know. Don't let them kill all of our GMO Labeling Efforts!!
Congressman Mike Pompeo of Kansas has introduced a bill that would ban states from passing GE food labeling laws and make “voluntary labeling” the law of the land. Tell Congress NOT to support this corporate bill "The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act" (LOL at the name, right?)
✎ Sign ✎ Don't let Congress deny your right to know: Oppose the DARK act!
and don't forget to 'thank' the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) members like Kraft, Nestle, General Mills etc... They are the ones sponsoring this bill, probably wrote every word of it and spend many millions to fight our labeling efforts. They took the list of members down but it can be found here: http://goo.gl/m7kC8B as of June 30. 2013.
Surrounded by NONGMO verified cereals and USDA Organic cereals two cereals stand out as out of place General Mills Cherrios and Honey Nut Cheerios, the later in it's iconic sunshine yellow box. The nearly neon Cheerios box stands out for a very good reason, they are not GMO-Free or carried by a normal brand found in a healthy foods supermarket.
At Earth Fare in Charleston, the cereal aisle, located by the bulk foods section is small, with a few select brands and their varieties. Earth Fare in Charleston offers it's shoppers a nice even thought small selection of NONGMO verified cereals and cereals with the USDA Organic signage on them. The question of the GM Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios seem to be answered by Earth Fare that these were at the request of their shoppers and to offer shoppers items so that they would not make purchases elsewhere. Earth Fare didn't seem to notice that there are several of their brands on their shelves with Oat Os. It seems like an empty reason and has bothered me since this was the answer was given via their face book page last summer when Cheerios lived on the bottom shelf.
With the debate on GMOs coming into more State's legislatures and ballots and coupled the recent poll of 90% of Americans want GMO labeling a customer has to ask WHY is this on a 'health' food store shelf?
Why indeed.
UPDATE:
Earth Fare replied via our FB posting found here :
Hi! Thank you for writing us! Cheerios has recently committed to being GMO free and all of their ingredients fit into our Food Philosophy (https://www.earthfare.com/food/foodphilosophy). This is a statement from Cheerios, "We don’t use genetically modified ingredients in original Cheerios. Our principal ingredient has always been whole grain oats – and there are no GMO oats. We use a small amount of corn starch in cooking, and just one gram of sugar per serving for taste. But our corn starch comes from non-GMO corn, and we use only non-GMO pure cane sugar." We appreciate your concern and hope this helps clear some things up! Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thank you for shopping with us!
What are your thoughts on Big Business products taking up space in 'health food stores' esp prime real estate giving the impression that this is an organic healthy option?
On May 24th, millions of activists from around the world will once again March Against Monsanto, calling for the permanent boycott of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and other harmful agro-chemicals. Currently, marches will occur on six continents, in 52 countries, with events in over 400 cities. In the US, solidarity marches are slated to occur in 47 states.
Charleston, SC will be marching to show a united demand for Senator Tim Scott and Lindsay Graham to worry more about the consumers in their states using and wearing GMOs than the farmer trying to sell the GMO/GE crops. Please RSVP on our event page and help us on 5/24/14 show South Carolina that we want to be part of the solution and not the problem.
I had no idea that Starbucks was largest purchaser of milk in the entire country. Of course that is milk from cows that eat a diet of 100% GMO soy, corn and alfalfa. As a nondairy drinker, I wish Starbucks offered organic soy and organic coconut milk as well. They'd sell the heck out of it for sure.
Your purchase power can change things. And it begins with one step, one email, one purchase, one request, one letter to a company you love, one share of a meme, one friend who sees your post, one head nod that says WE CAN DO BETTER.
What the Starbucks? Cows living in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) are fed a grain diet comprised almost entirely of GMO corn, soy, alfalfa, and cottonseed.
Please watch this 5 minute video with the daughter of a Vietnam Vet to learn about the generational diseases she lives with - attributable to her father's exposure to Agent Orange, an herbicide manufactured by Dow and Monsanto.
They claim that Agent Orange is safe.
Kelly and the hundreds of thousands of Vets and their children know better. And yet, the USDA is poised to approve Dow's 2,4-D GMO crops. 2,4-D is one of two herbicides that make up Agent Orange and was recently banned in Australia.
WHAT'S WRONG WITH 2,4-D HERBICIDE AND DOW'S 2,4-D GMO CROPS?
One word: Everything.
Beyond threats to clean water and health, 2,4-D has a notorious history of drift, killing most plant life that it touches and putting non-GMO and organic crops at risk. And when damages occur, as usual, the agrichemical/biotech companies get off Scott-free. Rather than forcing organic gardeners and farmers to defend themselves against 2,4-D drift, the USDA needs to change its priorities, get out of bed with Big Ag, and start working to protect our environment and help farmers farm without poisons.
We need your voice. The USDA's public comment period original deadline was Feb. 24 but is extended through March 11th. Tell the USDA to reject Dow's 2,4-D GMO crops.
The GMO farming system has made exposure to Roundup herbicide a daily fact of our existence, and according to the latest US Geological Survey study its probably in the air you are breathing.
South Carolina should be very concerned about the environmental disasters that are taking place in our neighboring states.
What does this have to do with food?
Everything.
When you poison the waters and the land, food will not grow, no matter how much we label it.
The Dan River has been exposed to 35 million gallons of coal ash and waste water per a study done by Wake Forest University. This is the third largest spill of its kind. (source)
And as the saying goes, shit rolls down hill.. Hey there SC and GA didn't see you there--- ((Wink-- Wink)) Why are conservative states so pro corporation? Because that is where the money is. They can distract the Women by whipping them up into a "Save the Babies from Abortions" frenzy and whip the men up by claiming they are coming for the 'gun and want us all in FEMA camps". This kind of control is what happens when you under fund Education. All the smart people leave the State and you are left with those with few options, low IQ, and easily manipulated. How else can a large demographic repeatedly vote against its own best interests? Over and over again. Conservative states across the board rank low in Health, Education, and protecting the Environment. Why? Because none of those three things will net corporations or politicians any revenue. Dirty politicians like McCrory will likely find plush six figure jobs in the private sector out of state, or high up on a mountain with cool bottled water wondering what all the fuss is about, not having to deal with contaminated water and land like his constituents; who more than likely voted him into office will have to face for the next 20-40 yrs.
Don't pay attention to the other hand
NC has been imposing tiny fines to keep privatelawsuits from forcing Duke Energy to clean up its act. Governor McCrory worked for Duke for over 20 years and arguably he still is working for them. Environmental organizations are fighting against the collusion between the state and Duke energy do nothing to clean up these dangerous ash piles along NC's waterways.
“Industry does everything they can and gets away with it almost all the time, whether it’s the coal industry, not the subject of this hearing, or water or whatever. They will cut corners, and they will get away with it. " Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D, WVa
I am waiting on campaign promises of GMO labeling to happen Mr. President. I support you and respect your office but the citizens and families of the United States of America are screaming for food safety and GMO labeling. You have allowed the fox in the hen house in the FDA by appointing Monsanto VP Michael Taylor. Have you lost your mind? Or just your conscious? Unplug yourself from Monsanto--- GMOFreeLowcountry
We're fighting tooth and nail to get GMOs labeled and what does Michelle Obama give us? More info about calories. America wants to know if their food contains Roundup Ready, pesticide producing, made in a laboratory by chemical companies, GMOs. As a parent and a consumer we should be able to walk into our local grocery store, pick up an item off the shelf, and be able to tell whether it's good for our family. GMOs are not good for our families. We want it on the label so we have the freedom to choose. 64 countries around the world do it and it's about time your good husband held up his campaign promise to label GMOs. No more distractions, please. We're not buying it. We need to know if it's GMO.
To hear the pesticide and junk food marketers of the world tell it, anyone who questions the value, legitimacy or safety of GMO crops is naïve, anti-science and irrational to the point of hysteria.
But how long can Monsanto ignore the mounting actual scientific evidence that their technology is not only failing to live up to its promises, it’s putting public health at risk?
Jim Goodman, farmer, activist and member of the Organic Consumers Association policy advisory board, recently wroteabout Monsanto’s deceptive use of the expression “sound science.”
But, ‘sound science’ has no scientific definition. It does not mean peer reviewed, or well documented research. ‘Sound science’ is only a term, an ideological term, used to support a particular point of view, policy statement or a technology. ‘Sound science’ is little more than the opinions of so-called “experts” representing corporate interests.
Simply put, ‘sound science’ always supports the position of industry over people, corporate profit over food safety, the environment and public health.
Here are five new reports and studies, published in the last two months, that blow huge holes in Monsanto’s “sound science” story. Reports of everything from Monsanto’s Roundup causing fatal, chronic kidney disease to how, contrary to industry claims, Roundup persists for years, contaminating soil, air and water. And oh-by-the-way, no, GMO crops will not feed the world, nor have they reduced the use of herbicides and pesticides.
1. Monsanto’s Roundup linked to fatal, chronic kidney disease. Article in Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, February 2014
What happens when you mix glyphosate, the key active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup, with “hard” water? That is, water that contains metals, such as calcium, magnesium, strontium and iron, either found naturally in the soil, or resulting from the use of chemical fertilizers?
The glyphosate becomes “extremely toxic” to the kidneys.
New GMO Studies Demonstrate ‘Substantial Non-Equivalence’
Studies document substantial differences of GM maize and GM soybean from their conventional non-GM counterparts, exposing a permissive regulatory regime that has failed miserably in protecting public health and biodiversity Dr Eva Sirinathsinghji.
Several new studies carried out by scientists independent of the biotech industry are showing up glaring differences between GMOs and their non-GMO counterparts. This makes a mockery of the regulatory principle of ‘Substantial Equivalence’ which has facilitated approvals of GMOs with practically no protection for public health and the environment [1] (see [2] The Principle of Substantial equivalence is Unscientific and Arbitrary, ISIS news).
Will our children be rolling in Roundup? Coming soon to a playground near you - another excuse to sell more Roundup. Scotts has released Roundup Ready GMO Kentucky Bluegrass into our environment. Employees have started planting at their homes. Not only on our food but now in our yards & athletic fields where our children play and our pets run. The USDA doesn't care. DO YOU? If you care, tell Scotts: NO ROUNDUP READY GMO GRASS. BOYCOTT SCOTTS Miracle-Gro, also an authorized distributor of Monsanto's Roundup.
I love you cookies, but I can't eat them or feed them to my family. I am sure you are aware by now they have GMOs in them. My family doesn't purchase products with GMOs in them. I miss my samoas and lemonades,... and thin mints too. We'd like you to make your cookies like Simply Eight, who just got their first product NON GMO Project Verified. We're not buying Kellogg's Keebler division GMO Girl Scout Cookies any more.
